Case Study

How do you provide great training without taking staff off site?

Background

Our client, a large UK airport operator, was obliged by law to provide 6 in 6 refresher training to all security staff operating security X-Ray equipment. The UK DfT regulation states that personnel are required to undertake six hours of training in a six-month period, often broken down into one hour per month or six hours of training in one day. The client has 6000 security personnel who are required to adhere to this regulation.

Need

The location of the existing training facilities was not conducive to the productive use of security personnel’s time. The facilities were an hour away from the workplace, meaning staff were away from their job stations for three hours at a time, for one hour’s worth of training. There was a need for training that could be undertaken onsite at various geographic locations, scheduled at a convenient time, without taking staff off site for extended periods of time.

Solution

Quadratica provided the client with X-Screen®, an online X-Ray training course. Designed and developed for X-Ray screeners of all levels - X-Screen® is an X-Ray Image Recognition and Interpretation Training course, certified by the DfT to comply with EU regulations.

Results and Benefits

Staff were able to be trained onsite, with minimal disruption to work schedules. All staff, regardless of experience level, were able to use the same programme, as X- Screen® allows for the modification of lesson styles to match the experience level of the trainee.

Visual recognition is a major factor in security screening. For security personnel to recognise a threat they need to have seen it before, in order to identify it as a threat. The UK Government found that without computer based training, it takes 5 years of ‘on the job’ experience for a security screener to reach competency in detecting threats. By using X-Screen® training, staff are able to stay up to date on the latest threats and identify any potential risk items as they are screened.

The cost of training was vastly minimised, due to the unit cost pricing of Quadratica products - if only 2 people require training, clients only pays for 2 units. (A certified instructor would charge the same amount whether they are training 2 or 20 people).

X-Screen® offers high quality, X-Ray correct simulation on all major X-Ray machines meaning no specific equipment is needed to be purchased for training purposes, and as it can be reconfigured to replicate new operational environments as regulations change, it eliminates the need to buy new training packages as these come into place.

XPSA

X-Ray Pre-Selection Assessment

Without proper training, the most expensive technology is of little value.

Our Pre-Selection assessment course helps employers determine the aptitude and suitability of prospective X-Ray machine operators and screeners. It tests employees’ ability to identify those who present a threat; testing for colour-blindness, image recognition skills and general threat image identification proficiency.

GSAT

General Security Awareness Training

The UK’s Department of Transport and EU regulation dictate staff who require a compulsory airside pass complete a General Security Awareness Training course before applying for their security clearance.

Our GSAT course covers a wide range of airport employees - from shop workers and cleaners to contractors, it has been designed and developed by accredited DfT trainers, in accordance with the strict UK DfT requirements, on the scope and content of GSAT.

Once the Security Awareness training has been completed, employees will have a clear understanding of airport security measures, their obligations, and what they are expected to do in the event of an incident.

CST

Checkpoint Security Training

Our Checkpoint Security Training course ensures that employees understand their role and responsibilities in relation to the safety of the Security Restricted Area (SRA), while on duty at an airport security checkpoint.

Designed for any member of staff employed to control access points, this course trains personnel to prepare people for security checks. It also covers searching bags and persons by hand, and the use of X-Ray machines or metal detectors.

STKC

Security Training for Known Consignors

Our STK course covers all modules of the Known Consignor syllabus – it is designed to ensure employees of Known Consignors who have access to known air cargo, meet the requirements of the DfT and understand their roles and responsibilities in relation to aviation security.

This includes recognition of prohibited items, explosives and incendiary devices, the correct way to respond to threat warnings and the principles of Air Cargo Security Regime.

STAS

Security Training for Airport Suppliers

Our STAS course is designed for businesses and organisations that have access to goods destined for airports and aircraft. From Regulated Airport Suppliers to airlines, airports and civil aviation authorities, we ensure employees understand their role and responsibilities in relation to the security and screening of airport supplies.

Developed jointly by Quadratica UK and Airlock Aviation, our STAS course is fully accredited by the DfT.

STP

Standard Test Piece

Our Standard Test Piece is a comprehensive training and information course, designed to help the user ensure the operational reliability and performance of X-Ray machines, using STP devices from all manufacturers. STPs are designed to ensure the correct functioning of X-Ray machines, allowing the operator to rectify any issues before creating an adverse affect on security.

It is a legal obligation within the EU to regularly test security X-Ray screening equipment for image quality. A standard for X-Ray penetration and image resolution, the Standard Test Piece (STP) was set by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) and the European Civil Aviation Conference to replace the Combined Test Piece (CTP).

TBT

Telephone Bomb Threat Awareness Training

Our Telephone Bomb Threat Awareness course is a training aid for any person who may receive a bomb threat via telephone, in the workplace. This comprehensive CD based training is designed to help organisations combat the potential disruption, and disturbance caused by telephone threats, training employees to handle the threat both during the call, and immediately afterwards.

PPT

Personal Profiling Training

Profiling is a screening technique that determines the security risk posed by an individual through the analysis of travel documents, behaviour and appearance. A degree of non-discriminatory profiling is essential – it allows security resources to be focused on those who present a higher level of risk to security.

Profiling can be a difficult task without proper training. Our PPT course educates security personnel, helping them identify those who present a threat and recognise abnormal behaviour.
