Correctional Facilities

Our courses allow security staff to manage the complex challenges faced when protecting correctional facilities.

Security issues at Correctional Facilities can have a crucial, deadly impact on society. As the prison population grows, so does the need for heightened security.

We understand the complex challenges prison security staff face protecting the institution, inmates, officers, and community. They are responsible for the security measures that the physical design of the prison building cannot control - from detecting very small items, to understanding the strict protocols that must be followed. We have worked closely with Her Majesty’s Prison Service (HMPS) in the UK to ensure our training is specific to the needs of this strictly governed sector.

Case Study

Students trained and tested to a common standard.

Background

As part of a wider induction course, this correctional facilities customer held X-ray image interpretation training sessions for their staff at a central location. Facilitated by a trainer with an X-ray machine, students would gather around the machine and view basic images from a limited library of restricted items.

Engagement across the training was inconsistent - not all students were able to participate due to a lack of access to the machine. Individual students were asked to identify images, while other students waited their turn.

Need

The facility needed a comprehensive and consistent regime that ensured their Image Interpretation training was effective, and that all students were trained and tested to a common standard.

Unlike other security checkpoints, Correctional Facilities operate under unique circumstances – operators must be able to detect weapons that can be brought through a checkpoint piece-by-piece over a period of many months. This is vastly different to the aviation industry, where a weapon needs to get past security in its entirety, in one attempt.

The training also had to emulate a standard working day at a Corrections security screening point. There are strict and well-established rules on what can and cannot be brought into such facilities. Staff must remain alert for potential risks, as they are subjected to virtually identical images, multiple times a day.

Solution

Firstly, Quadratica collaborated with the customer, allowing them to take part in the object capture for the interpretation training. This ensured relevant images were integrated into their learning database, replicating the day-to-day running of the correctional facility.

The system was then deployed into two mobile classrooms, allowing training to be completed in multiple locations.

Results and Benefits

The online nature of the training allowed the customer to introduce standardised training across the entire organisation, while the ability to train multiple users at one time removed a considerable training backlog.

Quadratica capture X-ray data directly from the machine’s receiver array, allowing for individual items to be added to the library and inserted into the training database as necessary. The half day capture evolution by Quadratica resulted in thousands of training images, specific to the customers’ needs.

Introducing multiple locations not only allowed for a higher staff training turn over, but a substantial saving on travel and accommodation costs.

X-Screen®

X-Ray Image Recognition Training

Designed and developed for X-Ray screeners of all levels - X-Screen® is an X-Ray Image Recognition and Interpretation Training course certified by the DfT to comply with EU regulations. The programme allows for the modification of lesson styles to match the experience level of the trainee.

X-Screen® offers high quality, X-Ray correct simulation on all major x-ray machines. Our innovative Bag-Builder module allows new threat objects to be added into the substantial image library quickly and efficiently. As regulations change, X-Screen® can be reconfigured to replicate new operational environments, ensuring employees receive training that is relevant to their duties, regardless of industry sector.

Available in traditional classroom format or as an online course.
